How Quickly Will My Dog Learn The Electric Fence?
This is an extremely common question that we get from many prospective clients. It’s an extremely valid question as well! We all want to give our dog as much freedom as possible when roaming our yard, but as quickly as possible as well. The training aspect is extremely important, however, in order for your dog to learn the boundary. We often see dogs “graduate” off of the collar and they no longer need to wear it, however, that can take quite some time and should not be a short-term goal.
How Long Is Training?
Just like with humans, the speed in which we learn can vary from person to person. With that being said, however, are typical goal for proper conditioning of the electric fence is right around 2 weeks. What does that really mean? We expect most dogs to be running around, off-leash, enjoying their new-found freedom in as little as 2 weeks. Some dogs may take a little longer to figure it out, while some figure it out in just a couple of days.
Regardless of your preconceived notions of your dog’s intelligence levels, we want to make sure we take things nice and slow. Conditioning your dog to the invisible fence can take time and we want to take things slowly so they don’t become scared of being out in the yard.
When Is My Dog Ready?
With every single installation we perform, we spend time at the end to conduct a preliminary training session to teach owners how to train their dog. An underground electric pet fence is a great way to contain your dog to the yard, however, we need to take baby steps to show our dog the way! Alongside one of the best dog training companies in the state of Delaware, we have worked with Delaware K9 Academy to come up with a comprehensive training plan to teach dogs how to respond to the fence.
If you take baby steps and slowly progress through our training program, it should not take long. Each step will progress further and further to see how your dog responds. Eventually, you will drop the leash and give your dog the freedom they deserve. If at any point your dog does not respond and react the way you were expecting, you should take a step back and repeat the previous training step.
Does My Dog Wear The Collar Forever?
We have circled back with clients years after the installation and many have reported that their dog does so well in the yard, even without the collar on. After months and months or years and years of conditioning, the dogs truly learn the boundary of where they can and cannot go. While it’s always recommended to keep the collar for the underground invisible pet fence, dogs will learn with time where they are allowed to go.
If you do enough training and are consistent, your dog will be extremely successful in no time!
