How Quickly Will My Dog Learn The Electric Fence?

How Quickly Will My Dog Learn The Electric Fence?

This is an extremely common question that we get from many prospective clients. It’s an extremely valid question as well! We all want to give our dog as much freedom as possible when roaming our yard, but as quickly as possible as well. The training aspect is extremely important, however, in order for your dog to learn the boundary. We often see dogs “graduate” off of the collar and they no longer need to wear it, however, that can take quite some time and should not be a short-term goal.

How Long Is Training?

Just like with humans, the speed in which we learn can vary from person to person. With that being said, however, are typical goal for proper conditioning of the electric fence is right around 2 weeks. What does that really mean? We expect most dogs to be running around, off-leash, enjoying their new-found freedom in as little as 2 weeks. Some dogs may take a little longer to figure it out, while some figure it out in just a couple of days.

Regardless of your preconceived notions of your dog’s intelligence levels, we want to make sure we take things nice and slow. Conditioning your dog to the invisible fence can take time and we want to take things slowly so they don’t become scared of being out in the yard.

When Is My Dog Ready?

With every single installation we perform, we spend time at the end to conduct a preliminary training session to teach owners how to train their dog. An underground electric pet fence is a great way to contain your dog to the yard, however, we need to take baby steps to show our dog the way! Alongside one of the best dog training companies in the state of Delaware, we have worked with Delaware K9 Academy to come up with a comprehensive training plan to teach dogs how to respond to the fence.

If you take baby steps and slowly progress through our training program, it should not take long. Each step will progress further and further to see how your dog responds. Eventually, you will drop the leash and give your dog the freedom they deserve. If at any point your dog does not respond and react the way you were expecting, you should take a step back and repeat the previous training step.

Does My Dog Wear The Collar Forever?

We have circled back with clients years after the installation and many have reported that their dog does so well in the yard, even without the collar on. After months and months or years and years of conditioning, the dogs truly learn the boundary of where they can and cannot go. While it’s always recommended to keep the collar for the underground invisible pet fence, dogs will learn with time where they are allowed to go.

If you do enough training and are consistent, your dog will be extremely successful in no time!

Can The Containment Area Be Altered?

The very first thing we do before we begin the installation is walk the boundary with the homeowner. We want to make sure we are installing the boundary wire exactly where the owners want it and leave nothing up to question. With that being said, however, we understand things change!

Whether you have a change of heart down the road or expand your yard, we can always make changes after the fact. While this is an additional service that will have a small fee associated with it, we would be more than happy to help give you exactly what you want. Just like our quoting process for new fences, we can give you a free, virtual quote for your expansion or alteration. We do not recommend that you try to do this yourself, as you may dig yourself into a deeper hole (no pun intended!).

Can The Wire Cross Through Water?

Do you have a stream or a shallow body of water that you would like to give your dog access to? Well not to worry – we can run our wire through the body of water so your dog can enjoy! Our systems are fully water proof and the wire will not become damaged or unsafe due to being submerged in water.

How Long Does The Wire Last?

We are extremely proud to offer a lifetime warranty on the wire that we install in the ground. We use a thick-gauged wire that we know will last an extremely long time. The elements will not destroy the wire with any sort of ease, so you will have peace of mind knowing you won’t have to deal with costly repairs.

We do recommend that you keep the flags stored somewhere safe in case you ever need to reflag the boundary wire. We recommend homeowners do this if they are going to have extensive yardwork done, lawn aerations, or other digging. This will help to ensure contractors and maintenance crews do not damage the wire by accident.

Will I Know If I Have A Break?

Fortunately, all of the systems we install come with an alarm to alert you if the wire is broken. The alarm is quite loud, so you should be able to quickly tell that you have a problem. If you are having yardwork done when the alarm is triggered, we recommend going outside to mark the location in which the crew was working. This will expedite the process of finding the break to make the repair when we come.

Electric Fence In The Winter

We are busy with installations year round and there’s a good reason why! Dog owners want to give their dog the freedom they deserve, regardless of the time of year. In the winter time, nobody wants to spend more time out in the freezing cold than they have to, so an underground electric pet fence is a great option for a lot of dog owners.

Rather than taking your dog on leash to go to the bathroom, imagine just opening the door and letting them be free. They can take all the time they want to sniff around, roll in the snow, and chase after leaves blowing in the wind. Let them enjoy their free time while you enjoy the warmth indoors.

We’ve Got The Equipment

While trenching through grass in the summer time is pretty easy, we have custom built trenching machines to handle any environment. Our equipment is prepared and ready to handle any weather and we can still get through the hard ground in the wintertime.

Even in wooded terrain, our trenching equipment and blades can get through difficult tree roots that would otherwise be impossible to get through when doing it by hand. While some homeowners opt to install an underground electric pet fence by themselves, we can understand that nobody wants to do it in the freezing cold. Enjoying Freedom

We know that nobody wants to be outside when it’s below freezing temps while waiting 20 minutes for your dog to go potty. Make your life easier by having us install an underground electric pet fence for your home. You’ll be able to feel safe and comfortable letting your dog out to exercise and do their thing while you remain comfortable inside in the heat.

Some dogs certainly take their time when going to the bathroom, which is never fun during the wintertime. Give your dog the freedom they deserve with our invisible fence system this winter! The holidays around the corner, so give yourself a gift that you can enjoy every year.

Quick & Easy Training

We have figured out a great system to condition the dogs properly, effectively, and safely to the electric fence systems. We typically tell owners to prepare to spend 1-2 weeks conditioning their dog to the fence. The training sessions need to be performed 2-3 times a day, but the sessions are really quick and easy. We typically recommend that you shoot for 5-10 minutes each session, so 15-30 minutes of training each day.

If you follow our steps and our detailed training guide, your dog should be properly conditioned to the fence in no time! You can feel confident knowing that your dog will stay in the yard, regardless of the distractions across the street.

Final Thoughts!

Investing in an electric fence system for your dog this winter is an excellent gift to not only your dog, but yourself as well. Spend less time waiting for your pup to go potty and spend more time inside where it’s warm.
